An end is the means to a beginning, this statement may seem harsh. I have found this to be a fact. As we grow the hard truth of reality sets in. Some of us retreat within, and some wear a fake smile. At the end and there is the first step toward a new beginning. Life is a journey, and we are all the captain of our own vessels.
My end was when my father died August 31, 2009; he had a yearlong battle with cancer. The time was bitter sweet; I worked at dairy queen and would bring him chocolate malt every day after work. After he passed, I knew I had to get some things together because time is too precious to waste. It was not long after that I decided to change my life and enrolled in Orion College. I decided to enroll in the medical coding specialist program. I did it for my father, my mother, my husband, and my future children and me. I want to have a good life and not spend it all working to the bone for a three hundred dollar check every two weeks at minimum wage. I want my children to look at me and see that it takes hard work and dedication to be a success.
As I walked through this journey with Orion College, I found out more about myself than I ever believed possible and realized that there is good left in the world!
The staff was available to me for any questions, and provided much appreciated support. The academic department called frequently to tell me what a good job I was doing. In the process of attending the nine month program, I grieved, grew, strengthened, struggled, worked, and got married.
I have now finished my program and am going to take the NAHP exam and then the AHIMA exam as well. I live in a very desolate area, in the county there are maybe 3,000 total population. When the results from the test are back there is a county that is 30 minutes from where I live. The good thing about this is, there are many institutions that need medical biller coders. One of my goals is to look into working for an organization that investigates Medicare fraud or OSHA. After about ten years I would like to open a private insurance consultation firm, to give real advice for real people.
The journey with Orion College has been an educating, enlightening, and nice experience. The end of this course marks the beginning of the rest of my life- a better life, an inspiring life and a happy life. Everyone should stop and smell some flowers once in a while. If there is one tip to leave you with it is things can always be worse, which means someone could have it a lot worse and still prevail.
